When the melodies of Johann Strauss float through the room, it’s almost impossible to stay seated. In three-quarter time, music lovers all over the world dance to the compositions of the “Waltz King” and listen to the highlights of the “Golden Viennese Operetta Era.”
Johann Strauss composed countless operettas, polkas, waltzes, as well as the famous ballet Cinderella. His most well-known work, Die Fledermaus, earned him the reputation as the founder of the golden era of Viennese operetta.
Born in 1825 into an artistic family, Johann Baptist Strauss followed in the footsteps of his father, who had already introduced the waltz to the courts of the Viennese aristocracy. Initially, Johann Strauss (son) was supposed to pursue a bureaucratic career, but at his mother’s insistence, he was allowed to develop his artistic talent. Like a large corporation, the family first toured Vienna, then all of Europe, and eventually even North America. At times, Johann Strauss performed concerts in multiple locations simultaneously. Ultimately, Strauss (son) was able to establish himself as a serious competitor to his father. Waltzes such as The Blue Danube and Wiener Blut won the hearts of the Viennese people early on. Today, the waltz and Johann Strauss are among Austria’s cultural trademarks.
The composer Johann Strauss has made himself immortal through his works. His compositions embody the Viennese way of life and the dance fever of an entire century. His music represents the splendor of days gone by and yet remains timeless!
